Throughout southeastern Virginia, public schools, independent schools and home school associations all held local school bees and sent their winners to WHRO, where the area’s finest middle school spellers competed for the regional title. From here, the first place winners traveled to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
