In 2004, WHRO's owner member school divisions created a regional initiative, the Virtual School, to begin developing mutually agreed upon online courses from the ground up. All of these courses are textbook independent; rich-media infused; instructor led; aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning; created and reviewed by content experts from across the region to assure the highest quality; and modular in nature to allow for maximum delivery flexibility. WHRO manages the effort and all courses developed are returned to the WHRO owner divisions for local modification and use.
The following online student courses have been developed: Algebra I; Algebra II and Trigonometry; Astronomy; Biology; Chemistry; Earth Science; English 9; English 10; English 11; English 12; Financial Literacy; Geometry; Health and PE 9; Health and PE 10; Oceanography; Physics; Virginia and U.S. History; U.S. Government; World Geography; World History I; and World History II. In addition, a seven-week Online Teaching Methodology course that teaches teachers how to be successful in a K-12 online teaching environment has also been created.
To help other Virginia school divisions in the most cost effective way possible so that they don't have to reinvent the wheel, we've begun to license these courses outside of our region. Our pricing is very modest and once a school or division licenses a course, they own it and can add to it, modify it or deconstruct it as they see fit to meet local needs. We've put hundreds of thousands of dollars into developing these courses and we don't see why other divisions should have to make the same expenditures if we can make our content available at a reasonable price.
