In 2004, WHRO’s owner member school divisions, known as the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association (HRETA), began a regional initiative to develop mutually agreed upon online courses from the ground up.

The idea was that these courses would be aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning, teacher-led, textbook-independent and filled with multimedia. With WHRO managing the effort, all courses would be developed and reviewed by local content experts and then returned to the school divisions for their individual use.

Today, more than ten years later, WHRO Education has created a catalog of 23 online courses, teaching students across Hampton Roads everything from Algebra I to Oceanography to World History. The courses are used in a variety of learning environments, and recently, our online course team was asked by representatives from WHRO's owner school divisions to present with them at two well-known conferences.

At the Virginia Council for the Social Studies Conference, Mitzi Fehl-Seward, WHRO’s E-Learning Manager, and Meagan Taylor-Booth, Project Manager, presented WHRO Education’s online social studies offerings and eBooks alongside India Meissel, a teacher from Suffolk Public Schools. Meissel discussed what it’s like to instruct students using one of these courses.

At the International Association for K-12 Online Learning Conference, our online course team participated in a panel discussion with technology experts from Franklin, Hampton, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach public schools. The topic was “Creating a Leadership Network to Support Your Online Program” and the panel outlined how they have successfully formed a consortium of online program administrators who provide technical, pedagogical and emotional support to each other.

We couldn’t be happier that our owner school divisions are proud of the work we have accomplished together and wish to share their collaborative efforts on statewide and international platforms. To learn more about our online courses and other regional services, explore the WHRO Education website!
